Esterel Massif

Massif de l’Esterel is a hidden gem of the French Riviera, unknown by most of the tourists.I visited the Esterel Massif during my one-week trip to the French Riviera, if you haven’t seen the complete travel guide to the French Riviera, you can check this out here. I was totally blown away by the views!

The Esterel Massif is located in the South of France, between Cannes and Frejus. It has a beautiful, unusual coastline made of red rocks. You can find there many wild, rocky beaches, caves and calanques. The volcanic origin of soil and rocks, gives the hills a specific, red color. The highest peak of the Esterel Massif is Mont Vinaigre (614 m.).

How to get to Esterel Massif?

I highly recommend getting around by car, it’s the easiest way and the most comfortable. There are many free parkings at almost every spot. Since we didn’t rent a car, we came by train and got off at the stop Le Trayas. So it’s also possible by public transport, but you won’t be able to visit every spot. I think that car is a must in Massif de l’Esterel!

A yacht, boat or sailing ship is also a great way to get to Esterel Massif through the sea, especially when you like snorkeling and swimming. Many travel agencies offer cruises to some parts of the Esterel Massif, you can check it here (there are cruises from Cannes).

Beautiful rocks formations near Le Trayas

We visited a small town on the coast, Le Trayas, with beautiful rocks formations. This is where I took all the aerial pictures which you can see in this post. You can find there many amazing photo spots for taking pictures. Don’t forget a pair of water shoes, since it’s very rocky everywhere!

La cabane chez Monique - delicious snack bar

After soaking up the sun almost all day long, we were craving some good food. Since there wasn’t a lot of restaurants, we just found a small bar on the main road. This delicious snack bar was located on our way while exploring the Esterel Massif. They serve fresh seafood, fish, snacks and also a variety of desserts! I had a tuna steak with french fries + salad. Judy, my travel buddy, (@charmingadventurer) had moules + french fries. Monique, the owner, is a warm and kind person, we really liked the customer service there. I’m sure you gonna love the food there.

Travel tips

  • don’t forget water shoes, sunscreen, towel and a hat

  • car is the easiest way of transportation

  • take & drink a lot of water
